Tips for Sustainable Living

Minutes of our last meeting

This website is intended as a means of communication and information sharing for members and friends of the UUCC Environmental Committee.

I hope that by sharing various suggestions on how we can all tread more lightly upon the earth, we will inspire one another, and learn new ways of being.

Center for a New American Dream

A great website that provides us with many useful ideas on how we can change our attitudes and actions to help tread more lightly on the planet.
For example,  the
Conscious Consumer Marketplace
lists 20 common consumer items such as coffee, bananas, flowers, clothing, cleaners and provides a guide as to the environmental hazards of many of these products, and suggests purchasing those produced in environmentally friendly ways.

This is what they write about household cleaners:

"..if you want some sage advice on how to detoxify your cleaning supplies, see our Green Home Cleaning Tips.

Focus on Magazines

Reading Suggestions for magazines which provide environmental,  scientific, or thoughtful articles about the world today. (these are eclectic and personal choices - do send your recommendations)

Utne (formerly The Utne Reader) - wide-ranging articles on different subjects, and provides a round-up from the Alternative Press (Read  current issue abstracts on-line)

Natural History (published by the American Museum of Natural History) - great for learning about a butterfly's flight pattern and other esoteric subjects, but also presents workshops, conferences and lectures such as the upcoming:

Expanding the Ark:
The Emerging Science and Practice of Invertebrate Conservation
Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26 at the AMNH

Scientific American. Very in-depth articles for the layperson with a scientific interest.

UU World. Our Unitarian Universalist magazine. Occasionally very good articles.

Natural Home Magazine. Tips for greening your house.

YES! a Journal of Positive Futures
Inspiring articles and really helpful resources for conducting your own discussion groups. Recommended by Bobbie.
