Past Events

This active committee has in the past organised a number of speakers and seminars on environmental topics such as:

  • Beach clean-up
We joined more than three quarters of a million volunteers who descend annually on beaches all over the world to help tackle the problem of marine debris and litter during the 18th annual International Coastal Clean-up (ICC).

  • The Social Action Committee hosted a lively book discussion of "In Our Own Best Interests" by Amnesty International USA Executive Director William F. Schulz. This book  makes the case that human rights ought to be worthy of support not only because they are morally compelling, but also because they are in our best interest from the point of view of national security, economic growth, environmental protection and health
  • Carl Frankel, acclaimed writer, and environmentalist addressed the congregation in October on the deep structural/archetypal model on sustainability. Carl provided a new and challenging look at ways to view ideas on the environment and sustainability.
  • the role of the Nature Conservancy in Eastern New York
  • a book discussion group on "Eco-economy" by Lester Brown
  • a ten-week seminar series on Voluntary Simplicity, a course offered by the Northwest Earth Institute
  • a talk and slide show on reforesting in Costa Rica
We have now launched our sales of fair-trade coffee (purchased through the UUSC), and have arranged for some paper recycling at the church  (thanks to Jean and Joanne!)
